First, you need to sign into your account and select the course you wish to create the group in. Once in the course, click on the gear in the top right of the page that is “Course Management”. In Course Management, go to the rightmost column and click on the button “Groups”. On the following page, click on the red “Create group” button below the box. Make sure when creating a new group that you name it and save your changes.
Once you have the group, you can then select it to add teacher(s) and users.

Before you can do this, make sure you have created at least one group in the course you wish to assign activities to. Then go into the course you wish to assign work to and turn editing on. You can do this by clicking the pencil next to the gear on the top right of the main course page. Then go to whichever assignment you want to assign and click on the three dots on the far-right side of the activity. This opens a small box. In that box, click on “Edit settings”. In the drop-down menu ‘Common Module Settings’ find “Group mode” and made sure it says “Visible groups”.
In the drop-down menu ‘Restrict Access’ change the box from ‘None’ to ‘Add restrictions’. In ‘Add restriction…’, click on “Group”. The new box here should say ‘Student must match the following’ and then in “Group” choose the group(s) you wish to have access to this assignment. Make sure to save all changes before you leave this page.
